It’s Sunday and I’m looking at piles of clothes, cords for various electronic devices, and assorted “stuff” to put in my suitcase. I’m not leaving until Wednesday. I feel like a kid at midnight on Christmas Eve! Yes, I’m that excited…and nervous. I have plenty to do before I leave, at the crack of dawn, on Wednesday.
I’m excited as this is my first time attending BlogWorldExpo-LA (#BWELA). Actually, this is the first time I am attending this type of conference. I have only attended work related, stuffy type of conferences in the past. There is so much to do and see at BlogWorld – plenty of sessions to keep me busy, people to meet, and parties to attend.
In between all the things I will be doing, I plan on tweeting and blogging, and somewhere in all of this, I’m supposed to be writing for National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), which begins November 1st.
This is a great opportunity for me to learn new things and fine tune the things I already do. I know this will help my blogging and in the long run, my business. I’m looking forward to the Expo as well. My list of what booths to visit is almost as long as what sessions I’m attending!
I’m nervous though, for a few reasons that you might be able to help me with.
- The thought of being surrounded by thousands of people who I don’t know is overwhelming. I have worked on my comfort level with crowds lately — I’m hoping that helps. The hardest part for me is introducing myself to others. I’m typically the one that stands at the periphery of the room and observes. This conference is not the place to do that. I do know that once I start feeling comfortable with things, I do ok.
- I am not good at networking. See paragraph above.
- My online world is going to merge with my offline world – I’m finally going to meet people who I’ve been “talking” to from Twitter and Facebook. Some of these folks I’ve talked to since I first stepped into Social Media, some are more recent friends. Regardless of how long I’ve known them, I’m nervous about meeting them face-to-face. I’m also super excited about meeting them. Is it possible to be both?
This week, Allison Boyer and Lara Kulpa wrote posts for the BlogWorld website. The timing of these posts was perfect. Allison’s post advised us “What NOT to do” at the conference and Lara’s post gave us great tips on “What to Pack.” For a first-timer, these posts offer helpful tips and advice, so you can get the most out of the conference (and leave with your reputation intact). I appreciate posts like these and if you’re going (first timer or not), you might want to take a peek as well.
With all of this in mind, I have a couple of questions.
If you’re an introvert like I am, what do you do in situations like this? What tips on dealing with crowds can you pass along? Do you have any “do’s and/or don’t’s?”
I am looking forward to sharing my experience over those 3-days with y’all! See you in Los Angeles!
