“Songs in the Key of Life”

“Songs in the Key of Life” is a 2-disc Stevie Wonder album from the late 70’s.  Fabulous album, a turning point in his music.  He made phenomenal music with this album – added sounds he’d never used before and traveled to a entirely different place.  You might recall “Sir Duke,” “Isn’t She Lovely” and “As” from this collection of songs.

One of the songs that I have always loved from this album is “As” (I thought it was called “Always!”).  For the past 2 weeks, I have been playing this song…over and over and over.  Can’t help it – I hear it going to bed, I hear it waking up.  It’s on my IPod which I use on the train and at work.  It’s on my computer (song & YouTube). For some reason, I have become obsessed with this song!

This is one of those songs that will have me singing out loud and dancing around the house and in my car.

Interestingly, this song to me can be interpreted one of two ways — romantic or spiritual.

First scenario — romantic.  Imagine a wedding reception.  The bride and groom are approaching the dance floor for their first dance.  The song starts out with the lyrics below:

“As around the sun the earth knows she’s revolving
And the rosebuds know to bloom in early May
Just as hate knows love’s the cure
You can rest your mind assure
That I’ll be loving you always
As now can’t reveal the mystery of tomorrow
But in passing will grow older every day
Just as all is born is new
Do know what I say is true
That I’ll be loving you always”

Fabulous way to start the first dance, don’t you think?  The lyrics get better as the song progresses as does the beat and rhythm of the music (starts mellow and then gets going into a real dance song).

The other scenario — spiritual.  I can picture a more progressive church that has it’s own band playing this for the faithful in their seats.  What better lyrics than these to raise those hands and give thanks?

“Did you know that true love asks for nothing
Her acceptance is the way we pay
Did you know that life has given love a guarantee
To last through forever and another day
Just as time knew to move on since the beginning
And the seasons know exactly when to change
Just as kindness knows no shame
Know through all your joy and pain
That I’ll be loving you always
As today I know I’m living but tomorrow
Could make me the past but that I mustn’t fear
For I’ll know deep in my mind
The love of me I’ve left behind Cause I’ll be loving you always”

I’ve linked my favorite YouTube version here — it is a visually beautiful version and it has the lyrics so you can follow along.  These are the things that come to my mind.  What comes to yours?
